Playing iPlayer content via the AppleTV2

The new AppleTV is a great little device if the majority of your content is stored in your iTunes library. But there’s one serious limitation for UK users. It cannot access any of the BBC iPlayer’s content. I’m sure a solution is forthcoming using an iPhone or iPad as a proxy broadcaster using Airplay. But if you want a solution now, I’ve found a great little app that offers a solution.

For the last year, I’ve been using iPlayer Downloader. However, in the last week or so, it’s started to fail. It appears that the BBC have updated the security on it’s streams and it can no longer grab them.

So I’ve been looking for a new solution and iPlayer+ has come to my rescue. Instead of relying on the iPhone mp4 stream, it will grab the flash stream, encoded it and save it to your iTunes library with appropriate meta data and thumbnail image. It even has series link.

You can also set up a template for the flash streams it will attempt to capture. If the HD steams are available they look best on large screens, definitely better than the stream via my PS3.

Once the files have been saved to your iTunes library, you can steam the straight to your AppleTV.

I’ve been using iPlayer+ it works fine on std bbc content with flash vhigh settings but when i try to access HD it will run for 4mb or a bit more then gives a download fail error, only by sitting on the player and repressing the start button will it restart and then adds to what it has already downloaded. For a 1gb file that means nearly a days attention sat alongside the computer. What kind of success have you had with HD have you picked up any tips.

Sorry, I’ve not had that problem. I’ve downloaded quite a few HD videos without issue
